Bliss Umeko Pashenko has always been a girl with a purpose. Born December 26, 1984, in White Bear Lake, MN, Bliss is the only daughter of Samuel Pashenko, an English teacher at Century College, and Lyn Le Pashenko, owner of a small bakery. She has an older brother named Aaron and a younger brother named Cary. They never had the big bucks, but they were comfortable in their smallish town life.
Being the only girl in the family had both its benefits and its costs, there are times when Bliss can be one of the guys, if any guys were able to talk to her. Between Daddy and Aaron- overprotection was key in the Pashenko household. The best thing about being the only girl is that she learned how to use her feminine wiles to her advantage. She knew when to tone down the "one of the guys" part of her personality, and when to turn up her "but I'm just a girl" parts.
Grade school was quiet for Bliss. She was a chubby girl, you would be too if your mom was a baker, and she worked hard to not let that hold her back socially. Early on Bliss got involved in sports at school- playing soccer in middle school and lacrosse in high school. She also managed the White Bear Lake High School Hockey team her junior and senior years. Academically, Bliss did well- excelling in English (naturally), but struggling in math. Upon graduation, she decided on Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA to further her education.
LSU is really where Bliss came into her own. While at in undergrad, Bliss completed a double major in Photography and English. She became involved on campus- joining student government, writing for the lit mag, joining Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Bliss had the full college experience: living in the dorms, making friends she still stays in contact with. She dated around, nothing too too serious. When grad school came, it was off to Tulane to work on her English degree.
She loved New Orleans. It was where she belonged, where she felt most at home- since White Bear Lake hadn’t been home in many a year. Once she realized she wasn’t built for living alone, she placed an ad looking for a roommate. That's where she met Marvin.
Oh Marvin. He was many things to Bliss: her best friend, her other half. After having lived together for a little while, they had a drunken encounter - which neither of them spoke. She loved him far too much to have a one night thing ruin what they have. That being said, don’t think she didn’t think about it. It just didn't figure into their day to day. Until it did. She came home drunk and dumped her heart to him- only to find out he'd been thinking about it too. That was four years ago- they've been together ever since. Together enough that she was willing to uproot her life for him- it was off to Boston. They’re just the two of them, and that’s the way it should be.
Now, Bliss works for Sam Abbot Smith – a wedding and event photographer working out of the Pru. Most of the time she’s working in the office – setting appointments, making sure things get done for in-studio shoots, acting as girl Friday gopher runner for which ever photographer is working out of the studio. On occasion, she goes out with the photographers and actually does what she loves: shooting photos that help capture some of the most important memories.
She feels like she’s settled, but not settling. Her life is what she wants from it: a job she loves, her best friend, the man she loves. For the time being, Bliss has everything she needs. |
